JUNIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER

ROLE PURPOSE

Support the Mechanical Engineer and Operations team during commissioning and ramp-up into steady-state operations by assisting with the handover, maintenance, reliability and continuous improvement of mechanical plant and heavy machinery. The Junior Mechanical Engineer ensures that mechanical equipment handed over from the project is maintained to OEM guidelines, best engineering practice and statutory requirements, and that maintenance planning, spares procurement, equipment replacement and improvement decisions are supported by sound data analysis, cost appraisal and risk assessment, while working under the guidance of senior Engineers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support the handover of mechanical plant and equipment from the project to operations, including participation in mechanical completion walkdowns, punch list clearance, verification of as-built drawings, equipment data sheets, O&M manuals and vendor documentation.
• Assist in developing and implementing the operational maintenance framework, including asset registers, preventive maintenance schedules, equipment histories, lubrication schedules and critical spares lists.
• Diagnose faults and support the maintenance of heavy machinery and mechanical plant through root cause analysis, recommending corrective actions that extend equipment life and avert unnecessary capital expenditure.
• Prepare cost estimates, budgets, investment appraisals and business cases for equipment replacement, upgrades and improvement projects, applying quantitative modelling and scenario analysis to support management decision-making.
• Perform risk assessments, feasibility assessments and due diligence to inform decisions on plant expansion, equipment replacement and maintenance prioritisation.
• Read and interpret mechanical GA drawings, P&IDs and equipment specifications to support installation, inspection, maintenance and modification activities.
• Support the strengthening of governance and compliance processes through the implementation and monitoring of environmental, operational and safety controls in the operational phase.
• Monitor maintenance and improvement project progress, costs and schedules; identify deviations and escalate recovery requirements to the Mechanical Engineer.
• Maintain accurate equipment records, maintenance logs, procurement documentation and cost trackers.
• Compile structured analytical reports, dashboards and presentations on equipment availability, maintenance costs and reliability for engineering and management decision-making.
• Interface with contractors, vendors, production, maintenance and internal departments to resolve technical and commercial issues without compromising production, quality or safety.
• Comply with all applicable SHE requirements, standards and statutory obligations while carrying out duties on site.
• Prepare and submit weekly and monthly maintenance, cost and equipment performance reports to the Mechanical Engineer and Operations Management.
