ROLE PURPOSE
Support the Engineering and Operations teams during commissioning and ramp up into steady-state operations by providing automation, instrumentation and control systems support. The Junior Automation Engineer assists in taking over, stabilising, optimising and maintaining PLC-based control systems and automated production lines and plant instrumentation, ensuring that all systems handed over from the project are documented, fully functional, and operated in accordance with approved functional design specification, while working under the guidance of senior Engineers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with the installation, calibration, testing and maintenance of sensors, actuators, transmitters, drives and control instrumentation, and verify correct integration with mechanical and electrical plant.
- Support the handover of automation and control systems from the project to operations, including participation in loop checks, punch list clearance, control system walkdowns and acceptance of as-built documentation.
- Assist in maintaining, troubleshooting and optimising PLC programmes, HMI/SCADA interfaces and automated production line logic to sustain plant availability and production consistency.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical and control faults on automated machinery in collaboration with the maintenance team, and support root cause analysis and corrective actions to minimise downtime.
- Compile and update control system documentation for the operational phase, including P&IDs, loop diagrams, I/O lists, control narratives, alarm lists and as-built drawings.
- Identify and support automation improvement opportunities in manual or semi-automated process areas, integrating control systems to reduce manual intervention and enhance monitoring and efficiency.
- Assist in implementing IoT-based real-time monitoring, alarm and alert systems and data logging to support condition monitoring and preventive maintenance programmes.
- Collect, document and analyse system performance and downtime data and prepare reports with recommendations for reliability and efficiency improvement.
- Assist in the development of automation-related operating procedures, maintenance schedules, critical spares lists and software backup/version control records for the operations phase.
- Interface with production, maintenance, electrical and mechanical teams, vendors and contractors to resolve automation-related issues without compromising production or safety.
- Comply with all applicable SHE requirements, machine safety standards, isolation and lock-out procedures and statutory obligations while carrying out duties on site.
- Prepare and submit weekly and monthly automation performance, downtime and improvement reports to the Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer.
