An opportunity exists for a Paralegal to serve articles of clerkship at a reputable firm in Roodepoort, Gauteng. You will gain practical experience across civil litigation, criminal law, family law, and commercial law under guidance of experienced practitioners. An LLB degree and eligibility to register articles are required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research using legislation, case law databases, and legal textbooks to support legal opinions and arguments.
- Manage the diary and schedule of attorneys including arranging consultations, court appearances, and meetings with deadlines met.
- Ensure compliance with the rules and regulations of the legal practice council and maintain confidentiality of client information.
- Liaise with clients, opposing counsel, court officials, and other stakeholders professionally, providing updates and managing expectations.
- Draft, review, and format legal documents including contracts, pleadings, affidavits, opinions, and correspondence with high accuracy.
- Stay updated with changes in legislation and legal procedures affecting the practice areas in which the firm operates.
- Maintain and organise legal files and records in physical and electronic format, ensuring documents are correctly indexed and retrievable.
Requirements
- Strong attention to detail to ensure documents are error-free and deadlines and filing requirements are strictly observed.
- A minimum of one to three years of experience in a legal environment including a law firm, corporate legal department, or public service.
- Excellent word processing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office to produce accurately typed legal documents.
- For paralegal and secretary roles, a diploma or certificate in legal studies, paralegal practice, or legal secretarial studies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with clients, counsel, and court personnel professionally.
