Role Overview

The Intermediate Phase English Teacher will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality, engaging English lessons that develop learners' language proficiency, literacy skills, communication abilities and confidence.

The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for the English language and the ability to make language, literature and literacy accessible, relevant and exciting for learners. They will use a variety of teaching strategies to accommodate different learning needs and will foster a classroom culture in which learners are encouraged to express themselves, ask questions, think critically, engage with different texts and develop a lifelong love of reading and learning.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Intermediate Phase English Teachers are expected:

• To plan and deliver engaging, challenging and differentiated English lessons aligned with the CAPS curriculum.

• To develop learners' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, presenting and language structures.

• To develop strong reading skills, including fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, interpretation and critical engagement with texts.

• To cultivate a genuine love of reading and expose learners to a broad range of age-appropriate literature, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and other forms of text.

• To develop learners' ability to communicate confidently and effectively in both written and spoken English.

• To strengthen learners' vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation and overall language conventions.

• To develop writing skills across a range of genres, including creative, transactional, descriptive, narrative and functional writing.

• To encourage learners to express their ideas clearly, creatively and confidently while developing their own authentic voice as writers.

• To use an inquiry-based approach that encourages learners to investigate, question, interpret, analyse and communicate ideas.

• To develop learners' critical thinking skills through meaningful engagement with texts, media and real-world issues.

• To incorporate real-world contexts and relevant topics to demonstrate the importance and application of effective communication and language skills.

• To use a variety of teaching methodologies, visual resources, practical activities, literature and collaborative learning opportunities to support different learning needs and abilities.

• To integrate digital tools and educational technology meaningfully into English teaching and learning.

• To identify literacy and language gaps and provide appropriate intervention, support and extension to meet individual learner needs.

• To create a classroom environment where learners develop confidence in communicating, reading, writing and expressing their ideas.

• To promote respectful discussion and effective communication, encouraging learners to listen to others, articulate their opinions and engage constructively with different perspectives.

Academic Delivery

Planning and implementing a rigorous and engaging English programme that develops language proficiency, literacy, comprehension, communication, critical thinking and creative expression.

Assessment & Reporting

Designing and implementing meaningful formative and summative assessments, analysing learner performance, providing constructive feedback and maintaining accurate assessment records.

Intervention & Extension

Identifying learners who require additional support or academic extension and implementing appropriate strategies to ensure that every learner is appropriately challenged and supported in their language and literacy development.

Classroom & Behaviour Management

Creating a structured, positive and motivating learning environment where discipline is rooted in respect, responsibility and mutual dignity.

Parent Partnership

Communicating effectively with parents regarding learner progress, achievements and areas requiring additional support, while building constructive and professional relationships.

School Brand Ambassadorship

Representing Maragon Olympus with pride and consistently modelling the school's Christian ethos, values and commitment to excellence.

Administration

Maintaining accurate lesson planning, assessment records, learner information and other administrative requirements within the prescribed timelines.

Health & Safety

Prioritising the safety and well-being of all learners and adhering to school health and safety procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

• A B.Ed Intermediate Phase degree with a specialisation in English OR a relevant degree with a PGCE.

• SACE registration and valid Police Clearance (non-negotiable).

• 2–5 years teaching experience, preferably within Intermediate Phase English.

• Strong knowledge and understanding of the CAPS English curriculum.

• Demonstrated understanding of literacy development, language acquisition, reading comprehension and writing methodologies.

• Experience with inquiry-based learning would be advantageous.

• Strong computer and digital literacy, with the ability to integrate technology effectively into English teaching and learning.

• Experience with educational technology, digital literacy platforms and/or online learning resources would be advantageous.

• Valid First Aid certification (advantageous).
