Independent subcontractors play a key role in helping First Fit respond quickly to project demands and maintain flexible, scalable capacity. Role Description The Independent Subcontractor Shopfitter role is a part-time or full time depending on the project, on-site position based in the various regions namely; Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal & Gauteng(JHB) . Day-to-day responsibilities include installing fixtures, fittings, and joinery for retail and commercial interiors according to technical drawings and specifications. The role involves measuring and setting out work, assembling and securing units, coordinating with other trades on-site, and maintaining a safe, organized work area. Subcontractors are expected to manage their own tools, transport, and schedules, comply with site safety rules, and deliver work to agreed quality and timelines. The position may require working to tight deadlines, performing occasional overtime, and communicating clearly with project managers, site supervisors, and clients. Prerequisites
- Proven experience in shopfitting, carpentry, or joinery, with strong skills in installation of shelving, counters, cabinets, and custom fixtures.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plans, and specifications, with accurate measuring, cutting, and assembly skills.
- Solid understanding of on-site health and safety practices, including safe use of power tools, equipment, and materials.
- Strong time management and organizational abilities, with a track record of meeting deadlines and working efficiently on multiple tasks.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to work professionally with project managers, other subcontractors, and clients.
- Own basic tools and reliable transport suitable for travel to various sites within the City of Cape Town and surrounding areas.
- Relevant trade qualification, apprenticeship, or equivalent practical experience in shopfitting or carpentry is highly beneficial.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining consistent quality and attention to detail.
- Tool proficiency: Safe use of hand and power tools.
- Blueprint reading: Ability to read architectural plans and technical drawings.
- Material knowledge: Working with timber, metals, glass, and laminates.
- Measurement precision: High accuracy for fitting counters, shelves, and wall units.
