A well-established electrical contractor in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal is seeking a Qualified Electrician for commercial and industrial projects. The role involves installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, reading wiring diagrams, and ensuring compliance with wiring code and safety regulations. This is a permanent position with opportunities for advancement.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair electrical faults in industrial machinery, control panels, motor circuits, and building systems using testing equipment.
- Install and commission solar photovoltaic systems including panel mounting, inverter connection, battery integration, and system configuration.
- Install, connect, and test electrical wiring, conduits, distribution boards, circuit breakers, lighting, and power outlets per SANS 10142.
- Adhere strictly to occupational health and safety regulations including lockout and tagout procedures when working on energised equipment.
- Issue Certificates of Compliance after completing installations or repairs, verifying work meets regulatory requirements.
- Provide guidance and supervision to apprentices and semi-skilled assistants, ensuring they work safely and competently.
- Respond promptly to electrical breakdowns and emergencies during and outside normal hours as part of a standby rotation.
Requirements
- Ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and equipment technical manuals.
- Proficiency in using electrical testing instruments including multimeters, insulation testers, earth loop impedance testers, and clamp meters.
- Thorough knowledge of SANS 10142 wiring code and the Occupational Health and Safety Act as applied to electrical work.
- A valid driver's licence with ability to travel to client sites as required, often carrying tools and equipment.
- A wireman's licence issued by the Department of Employment and Labour and electrical contractor registration where required.
- A recognised trade certificate in electrical engineering or national diploma in electrical engineering from a registered institution.
- For solar roles, demonstrated experience in photovoltaic system design and installation with relevant solar-specific certification.
