ROLE PURPOSE
Provide and clinically govern occupational health, primary healthcare and emergency medical services for the mine as it transitions from project execution into steady-state operations, ensuring fitness-to-work integrity, statutory medical compliance, effective management of the contracted on-site trauma centre, and the protection of the health and wellbeing of employees, contractors and surrounding communities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the Company's principal clinical authority and Occupational Medical Practitioner, providing clinical governance, oversight and technical direction over all medical services delivered on site.
- Manage the contracted trauma centre and its service provider, including scope of service, service level agreements, clinical protocols, staffing and equipment standards, KPI monitoring, audits and monthly performance reviews.
- Conduct and certify pre-employment, periodic, transfer, return-to-work, and exit medical examinations, and issue fitness-to-work certificates in line with job-specific medical standards.
- Design and run the medical surveillance programme for occupational exposures, including audiometry, spirometry, chest radiography, vision screening, biological monitoring and heat, dust, noise and chemical exposure surveillance.
- Ensure statutory compliance with the Mining (Management and Safety) Regulations, Pneumoconiosis Act and Medical Bureau requirements, Factories and Works Act, NSSA Accident Prevention and Workers' Compensation regulations, and Health Professions Authority licensing of the site facility.
- Lead emergency medical response and mass casualty preparedness, including on-call cover, triage, stabilisation, referral pathways, ambulance readiness, medevac arrangements and mock drills with Mine Rescue, SHE and Security.
- Manage injuries on duty and occupational disease cases end-to-end, including clinical management, case management, rehabilitation, restricted duty placement, NSSA reporting and claims support.
- Support incident investigations with medical evidence, exposure assessments and clinical findings, and advise on corrective and preventive measures.
- Implement primary healthcare, chronic disease, HIV, TB, malaria, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and employee wellness programmes for the workforce and, where applicable, community and CSI initiatives.
- Oversee outbreak and epidemic preparedness, immunisation, food handler screening, kitchen and camp hygiene, potable water quality and sanitation surveillance across site and accommodation facilities.
- Administer the fatigue management, and drug and alcohol testing programmes, including medical review of positive results and confidential clinical determinations.
- Control the medical budget, pharmaceuticals, medical consumables, controlled drugs register, medical equipment calibration and maintenance, and medical waste disposal.
- Maintain confidential, audit-ready medical records and health information systems in compliance with medical ethics, data protection and Company policy.
- Prepare health statistics, occupational health indicators, exposure trends and KPI dashboards for management, shareholders, regulators and Board reporting.
- Liaise with NSSA, the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the Pneumoconiosis Medical Bureau, medical aid societies, referral hospitals and district health authorities.
- Advise management on medical aspects of policy, medical aid schemes, ill-health incapacity, medical boarding, absenteeism and return-to-work programmes.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching and supervision to occupational health nurses, paramedics, first aiders and contracted clinical staff.
