SHEQ OFFICER

About Role

A leading organisation in the energy and gas industry is seeking an experienced SHEQ Officer to support the implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of its Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality systems.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring compliance with legislation, ISO standards and company requirements while identifying and mitigating workplace risks, supporting incident investigations and audits, and promoting a strong SHEQ culture across operational and field environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of the Integrated Management System (IMS).

• Monitor compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 , as well as applicable legislation and regulations.

• Monitor compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) , MHI, PER and other relevant requirements.

• Conduct workplace inspections, risk assessments, SHEQ audits and compliance assessments.

• Administer and audit Permit to Work (PTW) processes for high-risk activities, including hot work, confined spaces, pipeline purging and LOTO isolations.

• Support emergency preparedness and coordinate/lead emergency simulation drills relating to gas leaks, fires and asset damage.

• Identify workplace hazards and monitor the implementation of appropriate risk controls.

• Conduct safety inductions, toolbox talks and contractor safety file reviews.

• Exercise appropriate stop-work authority where safety requirements are not being met.

• Monitor housekeeping, safety infringements and corrective actions.

• Support accident, incident and near-miss investigations, including root-cause analysis.

• Identify trends and recommend preventative and corrective actions.

• Coordinate SHEQ awareness campaigns, safety communications and relevant training initiatives.

• Maintain SHEQ statistics, registers, reports and audit documentation.

• Assist with internal audits and the close-out of non-conformances.

• Monitor environmental compliance and relevant environmental requirements.

• Support fleet-related SHEQ requirements.

• Monitor security-related SHEQ requirements and outsourced SHEQ services.

• Liaise with relevant authorities and service providers on SHEQ matters when required.

• Keep management informed of material risks, incidents, legislative changes and SHEQ trends.

• Provide practical recommendations to improve SHEQ performance across the organisation.

Minimum Requirements

• National Diploma or Degree in Health and Safety or an equivalent qualification.

• 35 years' SHEQ experience in a highly complex industrial environment.

• Experience within chemical plants, oil & gas, gas distribution, energy or similar high-risk environments will be highly advantageous.

• Strong working knowledge of:

  • Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)

  • National Environmental Management Act (NEMA)

  • MHI Regulations

  • Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER)

  • Construction Regulations

  • SANS gas-related standards

  • Project safety compliance requirements

• Valid Driver's Licence.

• Ability to conduct risk assessments, workplace inspections, audits and incident investigations .

• Ability to read and understand technical drawings.

• Practical knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 will be advantageous.

• Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and PowerPoint .

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on SHEQ professional with experience in high-risk industrial environments , particularly where gas, pressure equipment, hazardous operations, contractors and complex safety requirements are involved.

Candidates with experience in oil & gas, gas distribution, chemical manufacturing, energy, petrochemical or similar industrial environments will be particularly relevant.

Preference will be given in accordance with the organisation's Employment Equity requirements.
