A large agricultural operation near Grahamstown, Eastern Cape is seeking a Livestock Manager to oversee day-to-day farming activities. The role involves planning crop rotations, managing soil health programmes, supervising field workers, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and environmental regulations. This is a hands-on position requiring both technical knowledge and practical farming experience.
Responsibilities
- Liaise with agricultural extension officers, veterinarians, agronomists, and other specialists to access technical expertise and stay current with industry developments.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant agricultural legislation, food safety standards, and environmental regulations applicable to farming operations.
- Monitor the health and growth of crops or livestock daily, identifying signs of disease, nutrient deficiency, or pest infestation and taking corrective action.
- Prepare budgets and financial forecasts for farming operations, track actual expenditure against projections, and report variances to senior management.
- Manage and supervise a team of farm workers, allocating tasks, providing training on procedures, and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations.
- Maintain detailed records of all farming activities including input usage, production volumes, weather data, and equipment maintenance logs.
- Develop and implement comprehensive crop rotation plans and soil fertility programmes to maintain long-term soil health and sustainable yields.
Requirements
- Strong leadership and people management skills with ability to motivate and direct a diverse team of farm workers effectively.
- Proficiency in using farm management software and Microsoft Office applications for record-keeping and reporting purposes.
- Physical fitness and stamina to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions during peak farming seasons.
- A degree or diploma in agriculture, agronomy, animal science, horticulture, or a related field from a recognised agricultural college or university.
- Experience with irrigation system design, installation, and maintenance including drip, pivot, and sprinkler systems.
- In-depth knowledge of crop production techniques, soil science, pest management, and modern farming practices relevant to South African conditions.
